When I was 5 years old in the Dominican Republic,
Yuri released
Maldita Primavera. It became an instant hit, playing on the radio constantly, I soon learned the lyrics. After "performing it" for my parents an endless number of times, they bought me the single (on vinyl). That was the first song that I ever owned. A few months ago, I looked up the video on YouTube and sang along. My then-8-year-old daughter (she turns 9 today) overheard me and came running. "Who's that singing?" she asked. I told her the story. She asked me to pull up the lyrics, so I googled them and we sang along together. She learned the song and now she loves it as much as I do. The best part: she recorded herself singing it on my phone. :)
She doesn't understand exactly what the lyrics mean because her Spanish is not quite strong enough. But then again, I didn't know what the song was about either when I learned it and Spanish is my first language.

Fue mas o menos así,
(It was more or less like this)
vino blanco noche y viejas canciones,
(an evening of white wine and old songs)
y se reía de mi
(and it laughed at me)
dulce embustera la maldita primavera
(damn sweet, lying spring)
que queda de un sueño erótico si
(all that remains of an erotic dream)
de repente me despierto y te has ido
(suddenly I wake up and you've left)
siento el vació de ti me desespero
(I feel your void and panic)
como si el amor doliera y aunque no quiera
(as if love hurts and even if I don't want to)
sin quererlo pienso en ti.
(accidentally, I think of you)
Si para enamorarme ahora
(Yes, so that I can fall in love now)
volverá a mi la maldita primavera
(the damn spring will return to me)
que sueño si para enamorarme pasa una hora
(a dream, to fall in love, times passes)
pasa ligera la maldita primavera
(the damn spring goes by too fast)
pasa ligera me hace daño solo a mi.
(it goes by too fast and it hurts only me)
Lo que tu paso dejo
(What you left behind)
es un beso que no pasa de un beso
(is a kiss that does not go beyond a kiss)
una caricia que no suena sincera
(a caress that does not feel sincere)
un te quiero y no te quiero
(an I love you and I don't love you)
y aunque no quieras
(and even if you don't want to)
sin quererlo piensa en mi.
(accidentally you think of me)
Si para enamorarme ahora
(Yes, to fall in love now)
volverá a mi la maldita primavera
(the damn spring will return to me)
que importa si para enamorarme basta una hora
(I do not care if it takes only an hour to fall in love)
pasa ligera la maldita primavera
(the damn spring goes by too fast)
pasa ligera me maldice solo a mi.
(it goes by too fast and it curses only me).
