Beautiful Mess

An interesting thing about the following song(s). The lovely Belinda has recorded an English version of her song "Ni Freud Ni Tu Mamá," titled "If We Were." Now, that's not special. It happens often when Latin artists are trying to cross over into the American market. The interesting thing is that the lyrics of these two songs are completely different! If I had not first "heard" both of these songs, judging from the lyrics alone I would have never guessed that they were meant to be somewhat equivalent.

Ni Freud Ni Tu Mamá

No me lo puedes dar (You can't give it to me)
Hablar de ti me pone mal (Talking about you messes me up)
Nunca fui Freud, ni tampoco tu mamá (I was never Freud, nor your mother)
No te puedo cambiar (I can't change you)
Ni hacerte madurar (Nor make you grow up)

Lo hago por mí, yo soy así (I do it for me, that's how I am)
Ya lo intenté (I tried already)
Disculpa, no hay culpa (Forgive me, it's noone's fault)
Hazlo por ti, por no fingir (Do it for yourself, so you don't have to be fake)
Disculpa, no hay culpa. (Forgive me, it's noone's fault)
...
Lo cierto es que no hay espera (The truth is that there is no waiting)
Porque la vida en un segundo se va (Because life can be gone in a second)
No te puedo cambiar (I can't change you)
Ni hacerte madurar (Nor make you grow up)

Hay amores que destruyen (There are loves that destroy)
Lo que somos, lo que fuimos (What we are, what we were)
Y no lo puedes cambiar (And it can't be changed)

If We Were

I'd build you up
I'd be the best
You'd have it all
If we were, if we were
You'd never be
So damn depressed
If we were, if we were
I'd build you up
You'd never rest
If we were, if we were
We'd be the most beautiful mess
If we were forever...

You don't realize what your missing
All the huggin', all the kissin'
Shut up and listen to me

But we're not
I forgot
