Merengueras are patient...to a point

Tu te estas arriesgando
(you are taking a risk)
Y yo me estoy cansando
(and I'm getting tired)

Caro caro te puede salir
(Costly, it could cost you)
Caro por tenerme asi
(Costly, for having me like this)
Caro caro y vas a sufrir
(Costly, costly, and you will suffer)
Caro pues no soy feliz
(Costly, because I'm not happy)

Me dijiste "voy a cambiar" y no basta
(You said, "I will change" and that's not enough)
Con promesas no se calienta almohada
(Promises do not warm the pillow)
Juegas a la ruleta rusa y perderas
(You're playing Russian roulette and you will lose)
En serpiente no se puede confiar
(Snakes can't be trusted)

Caro caro te puede salir
(Costly, it could cost you)
Caro por tenerme asi
(Costly, for keeping me like this)
Caro caro y vas a sufrir
(Costly, costly, and you will suffer)
Caro pues no soy feliz
(Costly, because I'm not happy)

Hm. I guess that explains me.

Having a conversation with two of my friends, the topic of relationships came up. When asked what I would've done in a certain drama-filled situation, I expressed my lack of patience for people who play games and that I only give partners one chance to get it right. One of them asked when I learned that (wondering if I had ever been played). I explained that I have always felt this way. They wondered if I learned it from my mother. I told them that my parents have been happily married for 34 years. Then, a few days later, this song came on and I remembered growing up listening to Milly** and other Merengueras*** who insisted on no-non-sense relationships in their songs. So I appear to be a product of my culture.

~*~

Even if I were breaking in half
Even if my broken heart were to explode inside my chest
and my mind became clouded with thoughts of you,
I will not return.

Even if I were breaking in half
Even if sorrow were to tear from me my own life with a sigh
and I reach the end of the road that leads me away from you,
I will not return.

And you will cry, lament and suffer over me,
But I will not come back to you (not coming back)
And you will cry, lament and suffer over me,
But I will not come back to you (not coming back)
Even if I were breaking in half.
